Case Studies | Macro GSM and PCS Base Station

This re-engineering and product enhancement project was for a major US telecommunications company to update the macro wireless base station for GSM and PCS networks. The designed unit had to fit within the existing infrastructure and some parts backward compatible for the macro base stations. The outline requirements as listed below were developed into complete system and sub-system requirements by the process of detailed design into the three key discipline areas; the physical and mechanical, the electrical and electronic (including firmware and RF) and the system and software.

  • v 900MHz, 1800MHz and 1900MHz frequency bands.
  • Indoor and outdoor variants using common assets.
  • 6 RF channels, 20W per channel maximum per enclosure.
  • Extendable to 12 RF channels with additional enclosure.
  • E1 or T1 network operation
  • Network interface and base station controller backward compatible
  • Cost reduction
  • EDGE functionality
  • Size reduction
  • RF combination within enclosure for sector configuration.
  • Tough time to market program
  • Optional tower mounted LNA and power amplifiers.

General highlights of the design and engineering were;

Physical and mechanical, use of Pro/E as modelling tool and build control, Flotherm for thermal analysis of overall system and each electrical package, convection cooling techniques, and fast assembly time.

System and software, use of Rational Clearcase for build and modification control, Aonix Software through Pictures and Select Yourdon for formal design and data flow diagrams, use of LDRA Testbed for software metrics and evaluation, and use of OSE RTOS .

Electrical and electronic, use Motorola PPC850 microcontroller, Mentor for electrical layouts, DSPs and FPGA (utilising VHDL), JTAG tools, specialist development and test tools, RF engineering of transmitter and receiver chains, RF Power amplifier design, and RF combiners and duplexers.
