"How Test Strategy impacts on the Accelerated Product Development
process for R&D organisations and links to Business objectives
and Strategy?"
Synopsis of theme:
Often the R&D personnel within an overall Accelerated Product
Development (APD) process can become clouded with “project
myopia”. The product output of the APD process needs to be
validated by Test against the stated requirements and regulatory
standards before delivery to customers. The importance and impact
of Test strategy and its link to overall Business strategy and objectives
will be examined in terms of cost, time and quality. Especially
interesting is the use of test not only as a validation or verification
tool, but also as a design tool to assist the APD process. Techniques
such as simulation open and closed loop testing are examined complemented
with the use of specific test tools. Meeting and exceeding customer
expectation is a key factor for success in tough times for telecoms
suppliers. There are many phases from component, unit, stress, design
integration, system, type approval, production and investigation
testing in the product test life cycle from its product introduction,
through enhancement and finally, end of life. Selection of the right
Test strategy can not only improve the APD process but have a considerable
impact on meeting business objectives. Real life examples from the
telecoms industry are used to illustrate this aspect of business
life even for R&D engineers in the development of complex electronic
systems.
